Program purpose
Welcome to my Homepage is an international online residency program and non-traditional art venue for the creation and appreciation of new net art. Founded in 2014, Homepage offers artists a low-stakes opportunity to experiment and explore the web as a site for creative production. We have hosted over 100 artists from across the world wide web.
Residents are supported by individual mentors and a stipend. Artworks created through this residency are shared publicly online and in-person through partnership with the Austin Public Library and Games Y'all.
Net art is artwork created on and experienced exclusively through the internet.
History
Welcome to my Homepage originated as a personal project of Rachel Stuckey. In 2017, she helped found IRL, which was a sponsored project of MoHA, to grow the program by establishing an internship program, applying for funding, and securing physical exhibition and meeting space. Coinciding with Stuckey’s full time employment as Director of Digital Arts at MoHA in 2022, Welcome to my Homepage was officially merged with Digital Arts at MoHA to become a full program of the organization.
MoHA staff and Welcome to my Homepage residency artists have been at the forefront of many critical conversations about digitally born artworks and culture. As early as 2015, Welcome to my Homepage’s director Rachel Stuckey has been invited to participate in various lectures and panels on the topic, most recently as a panelist for the 2022 and 2021 Computer Art Study Days with the Smithsonian Institute, Archives of American. Residency artists have received local and national attention for the works created and exhibited through the program.
Andie Flores’s Homepage project was recognized by leading regional art criticism publication Glasstire, for their Best of 2021 award. Additionally, the 2021 Homepage project Zoom Escaper by artist Sam Lavigne received a great deal of attention from a range of publications like The Guardian, The Verge, Vice, The Daily Show, and CNN (Lavigne). Striking a chord with a pandemic-era audience exacerbated by the endless rotation Zoom meetings, the internet based artwork Lavigne created demonstrates the ways that digital born art can reach countless audiences, encouraging critical dialogue on issues of modern life and the human experience. Read more about these highlights here.
