Cage Match Project Start

From The Museum of Human Achievement

Hello Cage Match Project (CMP) program leads! Below you'll find guides and helpful links to use and reference while being a sponsored project of MoHA and working with MoHA staff.

Please , MoHA's Programs and Events Manager, for your events and fiscal sponsorship questions.

Please , MoHA's Programs Administrator, if you'd like to make any edits to your program page on MoHA.wiki: Cage Match Project.

Policy

These are living documents and absolutely open to feedback from everyone! Please them out whenever you get a chance and send a message if you have any questions. If you would like to provide feedback anonymously you can do so here. This document applies to all MoHA staff, studio members, volunteers, fellows and community members.

Fiscal Sponsorship

Cage Match Project is a fiscally sponsored project of MoHA that has a physical presence at MoHA. Because of this, CMP and MoHA have a contract regarding CMP space rentals, events, and administrative support, as well as specific processes to follow for managing payments and documenting events.

Read more about fiscal sponsorship at MoHA on our Fiscal Sponsorship page. Please also refer to your fiscal sponsorship contract for more details about the program's agreement with MoHA.

Open Collective

MoHA uses a platform called Open Collective to manage fiscal sponsorships. Through Open Collective, we receive your grant or tax-deductible donated funds and pay your employees, contractors, vendors, or other personnel directly. Fiscally sponsored projects will use Open Collective to manage funds, receive donations, approve expenses, and organize payments.

MoHA offers no-fee fiscal sponsorship (other organizations tend to request 5-15% of grant funds).

Present an Event

For each event, MoHA's events team will work with you on event logistics, event documents, and production support.

Below is the high-level view of MoHA's events process from the Organizer Onboarding page for your reference. Please read the Events SOP - MoHA/Family Programs - Google Doc for the full step-by-step events process.

If you are concerned about these deadlines, please email info@themuseumofhumanachievement.com and CC eriane@themuseumofhumanachievement.com.

Event Promotion

If you’d like your event to potentially be promoted on more than one MoHA Shows & Events newsletter, submit your event info by the 1st Saturday of the month. Public events are automatically added to the newsletter whereas private events are not, unless you say otherwise.

MoHA has limitations for what is promoted on their social media. Please refer to the Social Media section below for more info.

MoHA may edit the event info you submit to the Organizer Event Entry for clarity and to adhere to conventions in our PR materials.

Event Documentation

MoHA is developing a media archive which includes event documentation. Event documentation includes pictures, videos, and audio taken during your event, and MoHA would love to add ones from your event to our archive.

No hard deadlines for you here, but just a heads up that MoHA Staff will contact you after your event to request any event documentation that you’d like to share with us.

Facilities

Contact {{email|tori|themuseumofhumanachievement.com|Tor Reynolds]], MoHA's Production and Facilities Manager for any facilities-related questions. If it's an emergency, you can call us at 512-957-6642.

Studio Repairs

Have an issue in the space your program's renting? Please fill out the Studio Repair Form, and staff will get to it as soon as they can.

Inventory Check Out

MoHA has an Inventory Policy. This policy describes how to check out items/equipment from MoHA, as well as expectations between those who check out items and MoHA Staff. Policies apply to folks who are eligible to check out, which are current Studio Members, Resident Artists, Program Participants, MoHA Family, and community friends. However, there are some exceptions to note:

  • Organizers presenting an event at MoHA go through their own rental process with a MoHA Staff member – not the check out process listed below.
  • IRL Open Hours checkouts can use the form and be packaged on the fly.
  • Studio Members are free to use and return items onsite during the day, but offsite, overnight, and IRL tech check outs should follow this policy.
  • MoHA Family program leads must request items for their event and/or artists, not the artist themselves.

Check out requests are fulfilled when possible but not guaranteed.

Practical Things

Trash & Recycling

Trash goes to the dumpster which is out the front door toward Lyons (left). Tor will text you the code to the dumpster lock using the MoHA phone number. Recycling bins are blue and normally out front of the door nearest to the bathroom. Please break down boxes so they can fit in the recycling bins.

Fire Extinguishers

In case of emergency, there are 5 fire extinguishers located around the building within 30ft of any location. Starting from the front entrance of the building moving left:

  1. On the hallway going to the studios passing the bathroom.
  2. Common area to the left of the tools and attic ladder.
  3. Left of garage entrance on the gallery area.
  4. At the end of the hallway directing to the studios off the gallery area, to the left.
  5. Just to the left after the door by the porta potties
  6. In addition to that, there is a first aid kit to the left of the shower. Calling 911 for bigger emergencies helps too!

Fire Safety

Please please please, no open flames in MoHA. Always remember to turn off space heaters before you leave. Dispose of any oil based paints and rags in a proper fashion. Its an old wooden warehouse and its very important that we stay thoughtful and aware!

Wifi Password and Locations

MoHA staff will tell you the wifi password.

There are various networks at MoHA:

  • MoHA, MoHA5g, & MoHA Guest are all closest to the bathroom
  • MoHA2 is closest to the concrete floor on the other side of the building
  • MoHA trailers is outside in the yard near the garden
  • The Mall is inside of The Mall

Doors

The front door (up the concrete stairs) and the double doors by the portapotty lock behind themselves, just make sure to shut them tightly. Your MoHA key will open both doors.

The bay doors all open via a latch that you need to pull away from the door railing. Some of the doors can be sticky and a trick to get the latch to close or open is to put your foot on the bottom of the door while you pull. They are old so please open and close them slowly.

If you open a bay door either be the one to shut the door or make eye contact with another person in the space and tell them you’re leaving and ask if they want you to shut it or if they can shut it once they leave. Please don’t leave the space without a bay door behind you.

Lights & Breakers

The gallery lights are located on the wall in the gallery as a set of 8 switches. Each switch has a dimmer on the side of the switch. Above this set of switches there is a breaker box. This box is most likely the only breaker box any artist will need to ever touch.

The only breaker in this box that people need to normally use is “#27 - Work Lights”. This breaker will turn on a handful of the sulfide halogen overhead lights. These lights take about 5 min to warm up and if you shut them off they need 10 min to cool down before being turned on again.

Getting Locked Out

If you get locked out, there is a lock box on the handrail of the front door. Please return the key to the lockbox after you use it. Tor will text you the code to the lock box through the MoHA number.

Shared Tools

We have a selection of shared tools and hardware at MoHA.

Only use the shared tools in the space if you have already signed the liability waiver and have prior experience with using powertools. If you have already signed the waiver but want a tutorial on using any tool, contact Zac. You can absolutely hurt yourself using some of the tools improperly, so please be careful and do not use any tool you aren’t sure about. All tools are marked in the tool area which is right before the door to the bathroom.

All powertools should be put back in the place you found it. We try to keep this section organized and it takes a substantial amount of effort. Please contribute by putting things back or keeping the shared tools section nicer than you found it.

Ask Zac for a more substantial tour if you’d like one.

Materials and Hardware

MoHA has lots of stuff around! Some screws, lightbulbs, scrap wood etc... are no big deal to use and feel free to leave stuff in an organized fashion that you think others might use. Things like sheets of plywood, numerous shelf brackets, substantial amounts of paint etc... just ask Zac. Its an esoteric system of materials exchange, but use your discretion and ask if you’re ever unsure.
