The Collaborative Art + Technology Situation (CATS+) is a program for artists interested in expanding their work in digital and new media. The CATS+ Residency Program is a paid opportunity that brings cohorts of artists and tech wizards together to learn and collaborate on new work. CATS+ promotes troubleshooting, curiosity, and critical thinking around emerging and ubiquitous technologies. We host artist-led workshops, gatherings, mentorships, public showcases, a media art studio, an online wiki to remove the mystery from tech by foregrounding human connection, process, and experimentation.
This program is open to artists of any field who are at emerging to more established career stages. An existing technology or media arts based practice is not required. Applications open twice a year for Spring and Fall cohorts.
CATS+ relies on MoHA’s strong network of mentors and tech wizards to share information, offer insights, and collaborate with residents. Interested in being one of our wizards? Join the MoHA Wizard Registry.
Learn more about past residents, the projects they created, and what they learned and shared through the CATS+ program below.

Cage Match Project
Exhibition, ArtFeb 2017
Cage Match Project (CMP) is an experimental gallery that lives in an industrial caged-trailer. This weathered and rusted container resides in a gravel parking lot in Austin, Texas where it is under constant exposure to the elements and 24-hour public viewership. Its current curator is Aryel René Jackson, an interdisciplinary artist and educator. Cage Match Project was developed in 2015 by Ryan Hawk, a fellow video artist and sculptor.
CMP supports artists of various mediums to fully embrace the caged-trailer as a literal and conceptual context. Measured at 10 ft by 8 ft by 7 ft, this weathered and rusted container resides in a gravel parking lot in Austin, TX where it is under constant exposure to the elements and 24-hour public viewership. CMP provides independent, ambitious, and proactive artists to apply through an open call process. If selected, artists receive funding, 24-hour access for a 1-2 week installation, and promotional opportunities such as being featured on CMP’s podcast, started by curator Aryel René Jackson in 2020. CMP seeks to support artists who are dreamers, tinkerers, poets and thinkers to purposefully stage a narrative of the artist-at-odds, with either history, space, or a work of art itself.
Follow us on Instagram @cagematchproject for updates and news about open calls, upcoming installations, podcast episode releases, and art opportunities and events in Travis County.

Fiscal Sponsorship
Community, Professional Development, EducationAug 2017
The Museum of Human Achievement acts as Fiscal Sponsor for many artists and informal organizations to apply for and manage grant funding as well as donations. Fiscal sponsorship is a legal structure and tax mechanism to umbrella individuals and informal groups, events, or programs under the non-profit status of a 501c3 organization. This can help with eligibility for certain grants as well as reduce tax liability when receiving grant funds.
Fiscal sponsorship at MoHA provides some of the benefits of non-profit status and professional services to help build the capacity of community projects and new charitable organizations. Our service offers support for financial distribution and grant compliance.
MoHA operates a NO FEE fiscal sponsorship program. In most cases, sponsored projects pay an administrative fee, usually a percentage of all donations processed, to their fiscal sponsor organization. At MoHA, we see fiscal sponsorship as a pathway to economic equity. For this reason, we do not charge a fee on funds raised by our fiscally sponsored projects. MoHA’s fiscally sponsored projects and organizations must be aligned with our mission and committed to upholding our community standards.
Read about our fiscally sponsored projects and organizations on our Open Collective page, the platform we use to manage finances with our fiscally sponsored projects and organizations.

Grant Writing Hangouts
Community, Professional Development
Grant Writing Hangouts are facilitated co-working time where MoHA staff, artists, community organizers, and grant writers share space, eat snacks, and work together on applications for grant funding.
Hangouts are usually organized around a single grant deadline. Participants have an opportunity to discuss the guidelines and share their own proposals for feedback from the group.
We try to host hangouts for as many City arts and music grant deadlines as possible. Our timeline for scheduling these hangouts is dependent on when the City of Austin announces the grants, and may be made with short notice. In 2023, our grant writing hangouts resulted in $1.4 Million in funding awarded to attendees with 80% being first-time grant applicants!
Sign up for our Shows and Events newsletter to hear about upcoming Grant Writing Hangouts here.

Performance, CommunityDec 2013
The MoHA Holiday Show is an annual celebration of community and performance! This beloved tradition is a fun, campy, and welcoming event for joy among our community and their chosen families.
Building on historical East Austin traditions, since 2013, MoHA’s holiday show is an annual act of belonging. Past holiday show highlights have brought unforgettable experiences like 100 lbs of mashed potatoes, a crowd-surfing Scrooge, Edward Normalhands, a foam party on the deck of the Titanic, Hans Gruber crowd-surfing to his death and so much more. MoHA’s Holiday Show is a can’t-miss experience.
As James Scott wrote in the Austin Chronicle, the holiday show is “...December’s most anticipated avant-garde theatre project to descend upon the un-heated, un-airconditioned interior of that warehouse we all love.”
Volunteer shifts to help put on the Holiday Show are made available at the end of the year on MoHA's volunteer sign up form.
