Artist Bios
Daniel Greenberg & Troy Hoffman are collaborators who met at The Cranbrook Academy of Art. Their first show together, at the Detroit Museum of New Art, was called Cut Out Your Mother’s Eyes. The show was a meditation on a pedagogical exercise offered by Art Historian Tom Cummins, which states, if you are skeptical of the relationship of an image and what it represents, take a photograph of your mother and cut out the eyes. The good son or daughter would not be able to do it. However, through a queer perspective there is an implicit undoing of a normative notion between right and wrong, good and bad. While Hoffman’s works are a collision of bestial and uncanny imagery, Greenberg’s works are often ephemeral, and naturally fade and disintegrate over-time. A second layer in both artists’ practice is purely linguistic, working from images that are more commonly read then seen. Images with pre-existing cultural implications are approached sideways rather than straight on as a means to address queer sexuality, which requires a rethinking of normative terminology.
