-"shìshí shì shíshì" is the sonic romanization of the Chinese sentence, "事實是實事", which loosely translates to, "Reality is a true fact". Using video, sound, and text-to-speech software, this project will explore how repetition can make words feel increasingly out-of-this-world -- especially a tonal language with a very different structural foundation than English.

-Playing with juxtaposition and repetition to deconstruct old American phrases and idioms from the 1800s, Hannah Jove will perform a live poetry reading over the video and sounds of shìshí shì shìshí. Side by side, Chinese and English will encourage viewers to contemplate what exactly defines a word and how world views are defined by linguistic know-how.
