Feast: Writing From the Body
The poet Bhanu Kapil once described her work as “stories about girls on the floor of the world.” Using theatre and performance – eating charcoal, laying on the ground, singing – she was able to construct Ban en Banlieue, an incredibly personal and evocative work about body and politics.
Using our own bodies and physical experience as our inspiration, this writing workshop will explore what it means to engage with the senses as a way of writing towards ourselves. We’ll read and view excerpts from work “of the body” (Anais Nin, Hiromi Ito, Bhanu Kapil, contemporary dance, the visions of St. Therese of Avila, the Dadaists, and others), and participate in group conversation and group movement. With the help of both writing and theatre, this workshop will help you be more playful, honest, and connected to your art!
Participants of the workshop will receive a zine containing readings and writing prompts, for future inspiration.
Bridget Brewer is a writer, performer, and educator based in Austin, TX. Winner of a B. Iden Payne award and recipient of fellowships from Brown University and Surel's Place, her work centralizes Catholic mythology, queer camp, and the somatic as a way of interrogating the private/public theater of devotion in its many forms.
