Planning your trip

Temperature

Here is a temperature converter, make sure you check the ranges before coming, Austin might get a little extreme temperature wise so planning in advance is strongly encouraged.

Accommodations

As you might have read, you’ll be staying at a renovated 70’s trailer with a private yard; this means you’ll have access to pillows, blanket, heater, AC, clean towel, sheets and a small fridge.

Sink

There is small sink in the trailer that drains to the outdoors. Please only use nature friendly soaps/products.

Studio Space

The Studio space is equipped with a projector, desk, lights, chairs and a fan, please let us know if you might have different needs and we’ll try to provide them.

On Site

Wifi

Zac will text you the wifi password. The network closest to the trailer is "moha trailer" and nearest to the studio is "MoHA"

Materials and Supplies

@unlistedprojects | Instagram

There is a Unlisted Projects instagram account which changes hands with each resident artist. Send Zac a text or message on whatsapp for the login info.

Once you login, feel free to introduce yourself however you’d like, follow whoever you want and basically do as you will with the account. It’s yours for a month. We encourage artists to post updates 3-4 times a week and have made an effort for local curators and artists to follow the account.

How to get around and what to see

There is a bike you will have access to, Zac will text you the code.

We have also compiled a list of recommended places in Austin that will help you navigate the city. This is an interactive google map version. There you’ll find art galleries, supply resources, food spots, grocery stores and emergency clinics (among other things). Additionally, we prioritized listing resources which are close/within walking distance. If you decide you want to explore the places that are a little further away, here’s the bus schedule for stops close to MoHA: There are several bus stops nearby (included in the map). It is always a good idea to download CapMetro’s app to plan your trips, and Yelp to find any type of place by location & reviews.

You can find stuff to do around Austin almost every day, Showlist Austin, WWWAustin and do512 are good websites to find about shows and events happening in the city; don’t hesitate to ask MoHA folks about upcoming events too!

MoHA has good partnerships with different institutions, Blanton Museum, UT, Texas State, Fusebox and The Contemporary are some of the spots you should definitely check out.

Keep in mind that there isn’t free wifi everywhere you go, make sure to save your route on your phone in case you’re heading out; McDonald’s, Starbucks and popular coffee shops are a safe bet in case you need to connect.

For parking purposes, there’s a bicycle area right in front of the entrance door. If you’re driving a car you can park it on the cemented area. Parking does get crazy during events, the only rule here is to be mindful of others and don’t block anybody’s vehicle or exits.

Expectations

The UP residency is tailored to artists of varying media and practices. We are especially keen on artists who have a socially collaborative and/or new media art practice.

As part of your residency, we expect a public project that can consist of any type of creative pursuit that you find compelling. A group or solo exhibition or performance is readily an option at UP at the end of the residency although not necessarily required. Resident artists are asked to donate one piece to UPs ongoing collection; we hope to have a large retrospective show once we get really old.

Extra Hands

As a part of a community run center for artists, MoHA artists and members sometimes are asked to take part in the creation and maintenance of its facilities and programming. We are frequently renovating our building – a process that would be impossible without our dedicated network of volunteers. A constantly changing physical and social environment, MoHA is always a work-in-progress, and there are many opportunities to leave one’s mark.

The MoHA building is an active environment of working artists and we’ve found the most successful residents are those who enjoy social engagement and visits but also feel comfortable shutting the door to focus.

Practical Things

Sounds and Plants

There are some railroad tracks located directly behind the building, as well as the trailers. It seldom passes by, but when it does it is (for better or worse) usually late at night. For this, we have provided earplugs that you will find in the trailer. Also, be mindful of the potential for poison ivy surrounding the premises. Boots or long pants are recommended for exploring

If you have any questions, concerns, or needs, please do not hesitate to use the following contact info for MoHA-affiliated folks!

Trash & Recycling

Trash goes to the dumpster which is out the front door toward Lyons (left). Zac will text you the code to the dumpster lock. Recycling bins are blue and normally out front of the door nearest to the bathroom. Please break down boxes so they can fit in the recycling bins.

Fire Extinguishers

In case of emergency, there are 5 fire extinguishers located around the building within 30ft of any location. Starting from the front entrance of the building moving left:

  1. On the hallway going to the studios passing the bathroom.
  2. Common area to the left of the tools and attic ladder.
  3. Left of garage entrance on the gallery area.
  4. At the end of the hallway directing to the studios off the gallery area, to the left.
  5. Just to the left after the door by the porta potties
  6. In addition to that, there is a first aid kit to the left of the shower. Calling 911 for bigger emergencies helps too!

Fire Safety

Please please please, no open flames in MoHA. Always remember to turn off space heaters before you leave. Dispose of any oil based paints and rags in a proper fashion. Its an old wooden warehouse and its very important that we stay thoughtful and aware!

Wifi Password and Locations

Zac will text you the wifi password.

There are various networks at MoHA:

  • MoHA, MoHA5g, & MoHA Guest are all closest to the bathroom
  • MoHA2 is closest to the concrete floor on the other side of the building
  • MoHA trailers is outside in the yard near the garden
  • The Mall is inside of The Mall

Doors

The front door (up the concrete stairs) and the double doors by the portapotty lock behind themselves, just make sure to shut them tightly. Your MoHA key will open both doors.

The bay doors all open via a latch that you need to pull away from the door railing. Some of the doors can be sticky and a trick to get the latch to close or open is to put your foot on the bottom of the door while you pull. They are old so please open and close them slowly.

If you open a bay door either be the one to shut the door or make eye contact with another person in the space and tell them you’re leaving and ask if they want you to shut it or if they can shut it once they leave. Please don’t leave the space without a bay door behind you.

Lights & Breakers

The gallery lights are located on the wall in the gallery as a set of 8 switches. Each switch has a dimmer on the side of the switch. Above this set of switches there is a breaker box. This box is most likely the only breaker box any artist will need to ever touch.

The only breaker in this box that people need to normally use is “#27 - Work Lights”. This breaker will turn on a handful of the sulfide halogen overhead lights. These lights take about 5 min to warm up and if you shut them off they need 10 min to cool down before being turned on again.

Getting Locked Out

If you get locked out, there is a lock box on the handrail of the front door. Please return the key to the lockbox after you use it. Zac will text you the code to the lock box.

Shared Tools

We have a selection of shared tools and hardware at MoHA.

Only use the shared tools in the space if you have already signed the liability waiver and have prior experience with using powertools. If you have already signed the waiver but want a tutorial on using any tool, contact Zac. You can absolutely hurt yourself using some of the tools improperly, so please be careful and do not use any tool you aren’t sure about. All tools are marked in the tool area which is right before the door to the bathroom.

All powertools should be put back in the place you found it. We try to keep this section organized and it takes a substantial amount of effort. Please contribute by putting things back or keeping the shared tools section nicer than you found it.

Ask Zac for a more substantial tour if you’d like one.

Materials and Hardware

MoHA has lots of stuff around! Some screws, lightbulbs, scrap wood etc... are no big deal to use and feel free to leave stuff in an organized fashion that you think others might use. Things like sheets of plywood, numerous shelf brackets, substantial amounts of paint etc... just ask Zac. Its an esoteric system of materials exchange, but use your discretion and ask if you’re ever unsure.

Office Hours

All MoHA staff open office hours are listed here via Calendly.

Discord

These links will invite you to the Fantastic Arcade or MoHA Discord server. Our Discord servers are for creating friendly, positive virtual space for the community to hang out, connect, find collaborators, swap materials, trade secrets, and anything else we can dream up together.

MoHA Events Google Calendar

There is a MoHA Events calendar that we put all programming on. Zac can send you an invite if you let me know what email to use and if you'd like to be invited.

Anonymous Feedback

Here is our equivalent to the anonymous feedback box.

MoHA History

The Family Tree

The following organizations are frequently referred to as the family tree of MoHA. They are organizations that have autonomy of decisions and oversight but also compliment the whole and make up the broad community. A good point of reference for this is the “whoa chart” included in the sponsorship deck, however in practice it just takes time to see how all these things compliment the whole. Collaboration between these organizations should always be viewed as a priority and a place where there is room for improvement

IRL

IRL’s mission is to empower a more diverse population of artists to use digital technology in their work, to create a dedicated space for public engagement with cutting-edge digital artworks, and to encourage artists to repurpose emerging and ubiquitous digital technologies in creative and unexpected ways.

The Mall

The Mall is a small art gallery in Austin, TX. We help artists make a living, with a particular interest in uplifting women artists, queer artists, and artists of color whose voices are more often marginalized, and to create an exciting and beautiful platform and context for their work. A majority of our gallery features works from Austin artists, and is exemplary of the unique culture of Austin. Beyond a space for exhibition, The Mall also actively facilitates education and community via four workshops annually, and the creation of new art via commissions of editioned work.

The Cage Match Project

Cage Match Project Gallery lives in an industrial caged-trailer. Measured at 20’x8’x7’, this weathered and rusted container resides in a gravel parking lot in Austin, TX where it is under constant exposure to the elements and 24-hour public viewership. By fully embracing the caged-trailer as both literal and conceptual context, Cage Match Project purposefully stages a narrative of the artist-at- odds, with either history, space, or a work of art itself.

Drive-In

A series of drive-in movies and in-car activities at The Museum of Human Achievement. Our Mission, an enjoyable community cinematic experience. Guests can attend in their car or on a reserved 12′ x 4′ wooden platform outside. Screenings will be broadcast via a radio station for movie audio and guests will be provided with a walkie talkie for optional socializing.

Station to Stations

An international artist residency and gallery housed within the destination sign of a former San Antonio city bus that now serves as a mobile performance platform. As the bus travels from place to place, or station to stations, the destination sign features text-based ideas from around the globe, transforming the bus into a moving network.

Upcoming

Peanut

A 90s city bus, “Peanut,” retrofitted to become an accessible and approachable hub for transportation between communities as well as a physical space to support conversations, gatherings and performances taking place directly within the neighborhoods Peanut seeks to serve. Because DIY platforms are built upon grassroots relationship-building, our community outreach program is as integral to our process as the performance itself. Peanut is an artist and community-driven collaboration that places arts and community in direct contact in order to celebrate the voices of under-resourced communities.
