A pop-up exhibition by Ryan Hawk

On Saturday, September 24th the Museum of Human Achievement will open Surface Topologies, a pop-up exhibition featuring new video and sound installation by artist Ryan Hawk. This exhibition marks the culmination of one-year of research from Hawk into the material history and physical properties of asphalt. Hawk’s fascination has led him to consider asphalt from its source -- in its natural, liquidized form -- to its expansive re-materializations and industrial applications.

Taking the form of high definition moving-images, Surface Topologies employs the materiality of asphalt through a consideration of its common applications — predominantly in the form of surfaces — and pushes at perceptual limits of space and orientation. The representations of asphalt in the work fluctuate from the familiar into the unknown and evoke a conflicting experience of proximity and distance. Surface Topologies aims to pressurize common metaphoric tropes regarding roads, such as those of directionality and discovery, to suggest a reorientation of power and the corporeal.
