Original band members were Mellissa (Cobb) DeMille, Gretchen Phillips, Teresa (Taylor) Nervosa, Tim Mateer, and John (Perkins) Hawkes. When Teresa was approached by the Butthole Surfers to join their band and play drums alongside King Coffey, Jamie Spidle from the all woman trio, Buffalo Gals, started drumming in Meat Joy. This was a sensible transition since Meat Joy rehearsed at the downtown practice space where the Buffalo Gals lived and rehearsed too. This lineup of the band toured the Midwest in the summer of 1984. We also recorded a self -titled album which won Best Avant-Garde/Experimental band in the 1984-85 Austin Chronicle Music Poll. Now after 38 years apart, Punk/Folk/Experimental band Meat Joy are playing a show at MOHA on October 21, 2023. We are playing 2 sets of music beginning at 9:00 pm. We are sharing the bill with our old friend and founding member of Buffalo Gals and Glass Eye, songwriter Kathy McCarty. She will start the show off at 8:00 pm. In addition, we are re-releasing our record on Friday October 13th. | Now after 38 years apart, Punk/Folk/Experimental band Meat Joy are playing a show at MOHA on October 21, 2023. Meat joy first formed in 1983. As a group, we were students, actors, and musicians in our early 20s. We all gravitated to the Punk scene in Austin and the jewel of Punk clubs, Raul’s. We were inspired by the Big Boys and The Dicks to start our own band. We created music that was categorically undefinable, and having a spontaneous element to our stage shows was important to us.
Our final show was on April 8th, 1985 at the Continental Club in Austin.
Over the years, each of us realized that creating music together was such a freeing, raw, and joyous experience that we all missed. We got together in Austin during May 2023 and rehearsed. Now we are so excited to be playing again in Austin, and at a warehouse space for the arts, MOHA. Please join us for this show and record re-release party.
