We request that children please attend with an adult for the entire duration of the workshop. We will close registration at 30 participants (no prior experience or skill level required to participate!)
- Workshop led by artists, Jasmine Chock and Julia Kunze
- What: Jasmine Chock is preparing for an outdoor installation art piece for The Cage Match Project. For the installation Jasmine, with the assistance of Julia Kunze, is making a lion dance costume for the 20'x7'x8' cage with four lion heads using paper mache, plastic bags and plastic yarn.
The installation will open August 2, 2024 at The Museum of Human Achievement
For this workshop, participants will get to:
- Hear more about the project.
- See parts of its progress.
- Learn a paper mache method with clay.
- Participate in making the lion heads with paper mache.
- Share their experiences with lion dance and plastic bags and imagine how this four-headed plastic bag lion came to be.
Other things to know:
Paper mache is a sculpture making method where one dips pieces of paper into a paste made of starch and water and applies it to the sculpture in layers. It results in a hollow, lightweight sculpture. The paste is non toxic.
For this workshop, we will build the lion heads with clay, cover the clay with plastic and then apply paper mache on top of the wet clay.
This is a messy process! !the paste and clay gets everywhere! Please chose your outfit with this in mind. We will also be doing the workshop outside.
Please wear sunscreen/hat and bug spray if you are able to.
If you have any newspaper, paper bags, or produce bags that you would be willing to contribute to the paper mache materials, or if you have any white, red or yellow plastic shopping bags that you would be willing to donate to the plastic bag lion, please bring them to the workshop! We greatly appreciate your contribution.
You may bring you own food and water bottle. We will provide light snacks and water.
Support
This workshop and exhibition is supported in part by Cage Match Project, The City of Austin's Economic Development Department and The Museum of Human Achievement.
